The moment Rapunzel’s body hit the bridge and a few board snapped under her she knew she had to fight. Rapunzel was known to be a fighter, she had gone against men three times her size and escaped countless guards during her first few days of freedom. Even without her frying pan — really any weapons at all — she could escape this. If she used her hair to pull on of the men forward, a small one behind another, she’d be able to knock those two out. Buttercup could make a dash for it and then she could take to the trees.
Luckily for her she wasn’t out of practiced when it came to climbing. Once there she’d have to wait it out until they gave up. Buttercup would reach the kingdom without her which would signal the guards and there would be a search. With any luck she’d only be scowled a little for her disobedience. But in the few seconds it took for her to hatch her escape plan another voice join the party.
This one was unforgettable but also one she had never expected to hear again. She pushed herself from the ground, the attention taken from her momentarily as the men argued with the infamous thief.![]()
Rapunzel stood there dumbfounded, frozen in place as his taunting got the better of her would be captors. Buttercup pushed her shoulder with her nose but a rain of arrows shot from the trees and she feared one of them might get caught in the crossfire. For the first time in a very long time, the princess had to play the damsel in distress.
She watched with a morbid curiosity as Eugene fought the men off. He’d always seemed to be one who’d run away from a fight if he could help it. He never mentioned he was some sort of expert marksman in archery — unless this was a new development. Two years was a very long time and she had no idea where he had gone and what he’d learn during his travels. It was frightening how heartless he fought back but she took note that he wasn’t shooting to kill just injure but then he effortlessly threw one the men down the rushing current and that idea sunk with him.
Before Rapunzel could even react he was tugging her away from the bridge and Buttercup galloped behind them. His hand was warmer than she’d remember it, rougher and maybe even shaking but that could be her. After what felt like a good long while of heavy breathing running she tugged her hand away and stepped back. “You could have gotten yourself killed — or worse! I didn’t need your help I had it under control,” she spoke in that snapping tone of voice of a mother who was angry (but extremely relieved) their martyr child had survived a near-death experience.
“You can’t just barge in waving your arrows around. What if they had friends? You don’t think that they won’t come back? Maybe for revenge? What if they come after you? What if they come after me or my people?”
Her scolding fell lighter than an april shower. He’d anticipated harsher words. Especially insults. After all, he left herfor two whole years. He deserved far worse and he would welcome it all when the time came. The edge of his lips twitched upward when her cheeks reddened with anger. She was too sweet for her own good. That was probably why he fell so head over boots for her. Even when she was shouting, he couldn’t help but to worship her. He wouldn’t dare interrupt her. For now he would admire her flustered expressions in silence until she was finished.
It was difficult to pinpoint exactly when he caught the stupid disease. He must have been mental to agree to that bet from the necromancer. Sure, they had been fighting; but it was just petty arguing, he thought. He never expected her to choose this bratty twig over himself. His ego got the best of him and it was his own fault. Part of him wondered if he should regret leaving Corona in the first place. Would she have wanted him to stay? It seemed like disappearing from her life was the best thing for her. She could concentrate on her marriage without the lantern guide mucking up the picture.
Let’s look at the facts. She was a princess and he was a thief. A thief with plenty of warrants out for his arrest in more than a few lands. He wasn’t exactly a parent’s favorite pick for their daughters. Did he think they would live happily ever after once he brought her home? He was a damn idiot.
He rolled his eyes dramatically and smirked. “Trust me, they're not coming back. Oh, that reminds me- I recall you making the decision to trust me. Remember that?” Flynn stepped closer. His eyes were gentle as he peered down at her frustrated face. It was like a breath of fresh air to see her again. He gauged her reactions in case she might try and land a blow across his poster perfect face with his next action. His fingers met the curve of her golden bangs, carefully brushing a strand away from her apple green gaze. A brief sigh escaped his throat before his hand dropped back to his side. “-or am I gonna have to earn that back?”
